The Big Butterfly Count at Mothecombe Gardens
Saturday 19 July | 10am–4pm
Celebrate high summer at Mothecombe Gardens with a day dedicated to one of the most important indicators of a healthy landscape: butterflies. We are delighted to be taking part in the national Big Butterfly Count, and we invite visitors of all ages to join us in exploring, observing and recording the butterflies that thrive across our woodland edges, meadows and garden borders.
Throughout the day, you’ll be able to follow self-guided butterfly trails designed to take you through some of the most wildlife-rich corners of the gardens. Look out for meadow browns drifting through the long grass, red admirals sunning themselves on warm stone, and gatekeepers weaving along the hedgerows. Trail sheets will be available at the garden entrance to help you spot and identify each species, making this a wonderfully accessible activity for families, children and nature enthusiasts.
This is more than a day of gentle wandering. By taking part in the Big Butterfly Count, you’ll contribute valuable data to a nationwide survey helping to track the health of butterfly populations and the wider environment. It’s a simple way to make a meaningful impact and to understand more about the role Mothecombe’s diverse habitats play in supporting pollinators.
Our plant nursery will also be open, offering a curated selection of pollinator-friendly plants chosen to extend forage for butterflies and bees throughout the season. Whether you’re planting a balcony pot, refreshing a border or building a wildlife garden.
Refreshments will be available throughout the day, with homemade cakes and hot drinks served in the gardens. You are welcome to take your time, enjoy the summer colours and explore the gardens at your own pace.
